Therapeutic Riding
Mounted and Unmounted Equine-Assisted Therapy
Therapeutic Riding is a form of remedial therapy for individuals with a wide range of physical, emotional, social or cognitive challenges. This particular form of equine connection allows the rider to develop new skills, build confidence, and experience personal growth. Designed primarily for children and young adults with a variety of conditions such as Autism, Developmental Disabilities, Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, and emotional or behavioural issues.
Carefully curated and delivered by ADEC’s experienced on-site Therapeutic Riding instructor, Jessie Ihrcke, the sessions aim to improve emotional, physical, and mental well-being through meaningful interactions with horses.
Each private 45-minute session is tailored to meet the specific needs of the individual, combining on-ground horsemanship, physical activity, and emotional therapy.
The lessons are structured around a set of activities, which involve a combination of grooming and caring for the horse, preparing the horse for riding, riding activities to explore movement and coordination and closing with praise and connection through feeding and physical touch.
The routine provides a platform for developing emotional skills such as empathy, responsibility and patience in addition to physical benefits such as core strength, balance, and motor skills at their own pace.
Therapy with Horses
Horses are unique therapeutic companions, providing a safe space for learning. They offer rapid and honest feedback, acting as a mirror enabling riders to improve self-awareness and understand valuable insights into their emotional needs and habits.
In addition, horses provide sensory stimulation, which is especially good for children and young adults with developmental or physical disabilities. A horse’s gait closely resembles that of a human, allowing riders who may struggle with movement to experience a “regular” gait, achieving balanced motion while riding.
